Rodents have large front teeth they use for gnawing at your food, wires, furniture, cloth, etc., and destroy things. Among rodents, rats and mice are the most common ones invading Texas homes. They are also referred to as “commensal rodents,” meaning they love to be around humans. If you have a rodent problem on your property, call for professional pest control Round Rock, TX, today.

Common rodents found in Texas Homes.

  • House mice.

House mice, or Mus musculus, are commonly seen and often take residence in homes and other structures. These little rodents can range in size from 2.5 to 4 inches in body length, excluding their tails. They have gray or brown fur and lighter-colored underbellies.

Large, round ears, small, dark eyes, and a long, slender tail with fine hairs are characteristics of house mice. These features allow them to be easily distinguished from other Texas rodent species. These are nocturnal animals and like to hide out in dark areas like attics, wall cavities, or behind appliances.

  • Deer mice.

You may see deer mice on multiple occasions if you own a farm or have outside animals. Although they can reside inside your Texas house, deer mice would rather be outside in a shed or barn.  This mouse often has a brown coat with tawny fur on the underside. Its size, including the tail, is between 5 and 8 inches, and like the house mouse, it can squeeze through tiny or narrow openings.

  • Roof rats.

Due to their lightweight nature, roof rats can climb very easily. This species of Texas rat gets its name from the fact that it frequently climbs trees to get access to buildings through the roof. A lighter-colored underbelly contrasts with the dark brown or black color of roof rats.

The roof rat’s body reaches a length of 6 to 8 inches, and its long, scaly tail adds an additional 6 to 8 inches to its overall length, making it a larger rat than the Norway rat. Roof rats have big ears, big eyes, and a pointed nose.

  • Norway rats.

The Norway rat and the roof rat are the two most common varieties of rats in Texas that might invade your home. Norway rat is the most common type of rat found in Texas. As this rodent digs tunnels in the ground, it is typically found around ground clutter, which includes things like concrete slabs, woodpiles, trash, rubbish piles, undisturbed materials, etc.

Despite being of Asian descent, the Norway rat is also frequently referred to as the sewer rat or house rat. This rat looks a lot like a little roof rat with its round snout, dark, beady eyes, and small ears. Norway rats have a length of 7-9 inches, including the tail.
